Every aircraft has a transponder which responds to radar queries by displaying an identifier code. This allows ATC to identify the aircraft on a busy radar screen. Transponders can be set to respond in various ways when questioned. Mode A only transmits the code, whereas mode C also contains altitude information. Mode S transponders give more detailed information like call signs and location that can be helpful in airspace that is crowded.

A common sight is a small beige box that is located under the pilot's seat in the majority of aircraft. This is the transponder and it is designed to transmit the SQUAWK code when the aircraft is activated by air traffic control. The transponder can be set in the ON position, ALT position, or SBY (standby) position.

Air traffic control will typically tell a pilot to "squawk the ident". This is a command for the pilot to hit the IDENT button on their transponder. The ident button causes the aircraft to blink on ATC's radar screens, allowing the pilot to easily recognize your aircraft on the screen.

There are 63 distinct codes that can be assigned to aircrafts but there are also some reserved codes that prevent the use of a particular code in an area that is prone to traffic or emergencies. The block configuration of the discrete code is dependent on statistical analysis in order to limit the possibility of two aircraft with identical SQUAWK code being in the same sector.

A transponder key contains a special chip that contains the ID code. If a car's security light appears, it indicates that the ID code inside the key isn't compatible with the code in the vehicle's computer. When this occurs, the immobilizer of the car will be disabled and won't start unless another key is used. PIN Codes

A PIN code consists of a sequence of numbers (usually 4 or 6 digits) that are used to gain access to an item, service, or system.
