In this video, Charles the humble mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is situated near the edges of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a message to the ECU through the grey wire T55/49 and then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The sensor is located at the edge of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear, the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends an electrical signal to ECU pin T55/49 through a grey wire. The ECU then uses this information to control the flow of fuel, timig and boost. It also sends signals to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to connect the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft is TDC and the location of the camshaft so it can start spark and injectors according to the situation.

If this sensor fails the ECU will show an error code P00160 which indicates that the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are out of sync and could indicate chain stretch or a jumped link on the upper timing chain. The code won't show without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

Testing can be a bit difficult since there are two connector pins and they serve different purposes but the best method of testing it is by measuring resistance between the sensor and the ECU. If the sensor is functional, it should read about 1000 ohms. If you are having problems with this part, check for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when accelerating from highway paytoll at full speed I noticed a massive decrease in power. It was as if the engine was running out of gas. Or my injectors weren't firing. In the morning, i removed the spark plugs. Three were soaked with gazoline and the 4th one was dry. I placed a tissue over each injector hole and when i turn the engine on without sparks, the 3 with gazoline jump right out. The 4th one remains shut. I tested the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I got zero ohm. I think the issue is in another location.

I also tried to reset the PID but with no luck. The car will start when the G28 is disconnected, but it runs fine with the G28 connected. However, the intermittent misfire problem persists at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for the coolant (G62) shows the wrong temperature of -49c even when i unplug it. Also i noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit is showing 2 bar, whereas the actual pressure is 0.0 when i rev the engine.

I'm not sure what to do. I feel like i've pretty much eliminated everything else. I'm concerned that i may have missed something. If anyone has suggestions, please let me know! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump on the g28 is activated by a signal sent by the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 sender and both work on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily find an extra in a wrecking shop or parts store. Test them out - put your DMM in resistance mode and measure between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector end up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black connector's end). They must be infinite ohms.

4. ECU
