How to Replace an audi key G28 Engine Speed Sensor

This sensor is located on the edge of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a signal to the ECU via the grey wire (T55/49) and then to the tachometer within the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

It is located on the outside of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear, the G28 Engine Speed Sensor Audi Keys sends signals to ECU pin T55/49 through an uncolored wire. The ECU uses this information to control boost and fuel. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to correlate the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft reached TDC, and where the camshaft lies in order to activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will display an error code P00160. This means that the Crank Shaft is not in line with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of an issue with the chain or a jumped chain link in the upper chain. However the code will not appear on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

It can be a bit difficult to test as there are several pins on the connector, and they all have different functions. The best method for doing this is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. If the sensor is operational, it should be reading about 1000 ohms. If you're having issues with this part, check for signs of oil or coolant in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday accelerating full speed from highway paytoll, I experienced massive power loss as if the engine was running out of gas or injectors are not firing at all. This morning i pull out the spark plugs, three were drenched with gazoline the 4th one was dry. When I start the engine without sparks i put tissue on the top of each of the injector holes and the 3 drenched with gazoline pop out, but the 4th one stays shut. I tried to test the ground connections of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I got zero ohm. So i assume the problem is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset the PID but with no luck. The car can start when the G28 is disconnected and it runs perfectly when it is plugged in but it still is experiencing intermittent misfires at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even if it is not plugged in, shows an ice temperature of -49c. Also, i noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit is showing 2 bar when the actual pressure is 0.0 when i rev the engine.

I'm not sure what to do, as i feel i have pretty much eliminated everything else. I'm afraid i may have missed something. Let me know If you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump of the g28 gets a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sensor is identical to the G4 and both are used in the 80, 100, 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a wrecking yard or in a local parts store. Test them out to do - just put your DMM in resistance mode and take measurements between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's end up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black connector's side). They must be infinite ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY and ADU) engines have an ECU that has to know the speed and position of the crankshaft in order to make a decision about timing of the fuel injector, for example. It makes use of a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to accomplish this. If either of these go badly, you will see codes on the diagnostic scanner that could cause engine shut down.

Some of the signs of a failed G28 sensor are an inaccurate gearbox rev counter the gears are shifting faster than normal and/or a misfire when you're in gear. If you are experiencing any of these problems, it is likely your sensor is deteriorating and requires replacement audi a3 key. They're cheap and easy to find especially in the case of an Bosch model like ours. If you prefer, GM's version of this component is an excellent choice.

5. Tachometer

A failing engine speed sensor could be the cause of a slew of problems in your car. It is a crucial part of your audi a5 key fob's transmission, since it relays information to the ECU about how fast or slow the audi car key's crankshaft is spinning. When this sensor fails, it could disrupt the performance of the transmission, as well as the other car's components.

You can test the sensor for failure by checking continuity between it and the tachometer. You can also check continuity between ECU pin T55/49 and the instrument cluster connection to pin T6a/1 (trace [79]) and between pin T6a/1 and the instrument cluster pin T26a/12. You should see around 1000 ohms of resistance between those two pins. This is the same across the audi key Copy 80-100-200-RS2 range, beginning with the 1985 MC and up to the 1997 UrS An and 1995 RS2 DU You may also find them in wrecking yards.
