How to Replace an audi key fobs G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video, Charles the Humble Mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is located near the transmission's edge just above the flywheel gear. It sends a message to the ECU via a grey wire T55/49, then to the tachometer on the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

Located on the edge of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear, the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends a signal to ECU pin T55/49 using a grey wire. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate the flow of fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an alert to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference point to connect with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must be aware when the crankshaft is TDC and the location of the camshaft so it can activate spark and injectors in the right way.

If this sensor fails, Audi Q5 key the ECU will display an error code P00160. This means that the Crank Shaft is audi key fob not working in line with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate the possibility of a chain stretch or jumpy chain link in the upper timing chain. The code will not appear without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).

It's a bit tricky to test since there are various connector pins, and each has its own functions. The most effective method to test it is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read approximately 1000 ohms when it is at full operation. Look for signs of coolant, or oil in the connector bay if you are experiencing problems with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when i was accelerating to the fullest speed from highway paytoll, i experienced massive power loss like the engine is out of gas or the injectors are not firing anymore. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning, three were soaked in gasoline, and the fourth was unclean. When I crank the engine with no sparks, I put a piece of tissue on the top of each hole in the injector, the 3 drenched with gazoline jump out but the 4th stay closed. I checked the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I got zero ohm. I think the issue is in another location.

I also tried to reset the PID with no success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it runs fine with the G28 connected. However, the intermittent misfire problem continues to occur at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for the coolant (G62) shows the wrong temperature value of -49c, even if I unplug it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars while the actual pressure is 0.

I'm not sure what to do, i believe that i've completely ruled out all other possibilities. I'm afraid i may have missed something. Please let me know should you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump on the g28 is activated by a signal sent from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 sender and both work on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. It is easy to find a spare in a wrecking shop or parts store. It is simple to test them: simply switch your DMM into resistance mode and determine the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector end facing up). They should be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU of our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY) engines must know both the position and speed of the crankshaft in order to make a decision about timing of the fuel injector, etc. It makes use of a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to accomplish this. If either of these goes badly, you will see codes on the diagnostic scanner that can cause the engine to shut down.

Some of the signs of a failing G28 sensor include an inaccurate rev counter in the gearbox the gears are shifting faster than normal and/or a misfire when you are in gear. If you are experiencing any of these issues it is likely your sensor is failing and needs replacing. The good news is that they are very cheap and readily available particularly if you're looking at the Bosch unit like ours. Alternatively, GM's version of this part would be an excellent choice.

5. Tachometer

A malfunctioning engine speed sensor could be the cause of a slew of issues in your car. You should see the resistance to be around 1000 ohms between these two points.
