Turn Back, the band's third studio album, was an attempt to return to the classic sextet structure, and a more consistent, stronger effort that had a more grittier edge. Its more punk-rock sound was a reflection of the maturation of the group and included drummer Bobby Kimball's greater ability on the drums and a more confident, mature vocal delivery from singer Joseph Williams.
