How to Replace an replacement Audi Key Cost G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video, Charles the humble mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is located on the edge of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via an uncolored wire (T55/49) and then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is situated on the edge of transmission, just above the flywheel ring. The sensor sends a signal via the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then uses this information to control fuel, timig and boost. It also sends a signal to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to correlate with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft is TDC and the location of the camshaft so it can trigger spark and injectors in the right way.

If this sensor fails to function, the ECU will display a P00160 error message. This means that the Crank Shaft is out of line with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate an issue with the chain or a jump in the chain link of the upper timing chain. The code won't appear without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).

It's a bit tricky to test as there are several pins on the connector and each one has different functions. The best way to do it is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. If the sensor is operational, it should be reading around 1000 ohms. If you're experiencing issues with this sensor, look for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when accelerating from highway paytoll at full speed, i noticed a huge decrease in power. It was as if the engine was running out of gas. Or, my injectors were not firing. Today, i pulled out the spark plugs. Three were drenched with gazoline the 4th one was dry. I put a piece of tissue over each hole in the injector and when I start the engine without sparks, the ones with gazoline jump right out. The fourth one remains shut. I tested the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55/30/55/48/55/14/55/48/ i get zero Ohm. I assume that the problem is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is disconnected, but it works fine when the G28 connected. However the intermittent misfire issue persists at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even if it is not plugged in, shows temperatures of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar while the actual pressure is zero.

happy-african-american-businessman-holding-car-key-2022-12-16-16-36-17-utc-min-scaled.jpgI don't know what to do. I feel like i've pretty much all other possibilities out. But i'm worried that i might have missed something. If anyone has any suggestions, please share them! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 receives a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 sender and works on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. It is easy to find an extra in a wrecking shop or parts store. It is easy to test them: simply switch your DMM into resistance mode and test the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector's end facing upwards). They should be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY and ADU) engines have an ECU that needs to know the speed and position of the crankshaft to make a decision about timing of the fuel injector, replacement key for audi a4 example. It uses a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to achieve this. If you have a problem with either of these, the diagnostic scanner will display codes that could cause an engine shutdown.

A malfunctioning G28 sensor can cause an inaccurate gearbox speed counter, a gearbox that shifts faster than normal, and/or a misfire in gear. If you experience any of these issues, it is most likely that your sensor is going bad and should be replaced. They are cheap and easy-to-find particularly if they're an Bosch unit like ours. You can also choose the GM version of this unit is also a good choice.

5. Tachometer

A failing engine speed sensor could be the cause of numerous issues with your car. It's an essential component of your audi key fobs's transmission, since it relays information to the ECU about how fast or slow the car's crankshaft is turning. If the sensor fails, it can disrupt the performance of the transmission and the other car's components.

The G5 engine speed sensor is situated on the outside of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear and sends a signal directly to the ECU at pin T55/49 via an uncolored wire. The ECU utilizes this signal to regulate the flow of fuel and boost as well as timig. It also relays it to the G5 Tachometer inside the instrument cluster. You can determine if the sensor is in failure by checking continuity from the sensor to the tachometer. You can also examine the continuity between pins T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79trace [79]) and between pin T6a/1 as well as pin T26a/12. You should see around 1000 ohms of resistance between those points. This part is common across the audi spare keys 80-100-200-RS2 model, ranging from the 1985 MC all the way up to the 1997 UrS An and 1995 RS2 Du So, you may find good ones in wrecking yards.
