How to Fix Car Ignition Problems

BMW-2020-New.pngThe car will not start unless the switch sends an electrical signal to the starter. Normal wear and tear over time may result in the switch not functioning properly.

Using special tools, you can take off your steering column trim and gain access to the ignition cylinder module. Check out your repair manual to learn how to do it right.

1. Check the Switch

A malfunctioning switch is among the most common ignition issues. It functions as an intermediary between two contacts, and controls the time when relays are activated and deactivated. It is less likely to fail due to the fact that it does not channel full power of devices such as the starter. The switch could still be damaged or corroded.

One indication of a defective switch is a difficulty turning the key. This can be caused by many factors that include not inserting the correct key correctly or deteriorating the mechanism over time. It is also common for people to misplace their keys to their car with those of another's, which could result in mechanical damage.

If the switch isn't functioning there are a few things you can try before calling a locksmith. You'll first want to ensure that the battery is fully charged and there are no electrical issues in the system. It is also important to check the voltage of every component to make sure they're sufficient power. After you've completed these steps, you'll be able to begin troubleshooting.

The ignition switch is simple to replace. It's connected to the ignition cylinder, which is a round module that connects everything. It's necessary to use a flathead and something long enough for you to press the pin in. It could be anything from paintbrush handles to Kabob skewer, but it is best to avoid any brittle material that could break inside the hole.

Remove any trimming pieces that overhang the switch when you are ready to go. Once you've done this remove and loosen the screws that keep the switch in place, and then gently remove it. Depending on the model, you may also have to unplug any wires that connect to it. If you have an instruction manual for your vehicle and model, it will show you exactly how to do this.

If the ignition switch isn't working, it's best to have it replaced by professionals. The replacement process involves disabling the steering column which could result in unintentional airbag deployment if it's done incorrectly. It is best to leave it to your local locksmith to handle this.

2. Verify the Wire

Your car might not start if it is difficult to turn the key or if it isn't starting. This could be due a number components in the ignition system. It's important to understand how the ignition system works so that you can pinpoint issues and make the appropriate repairs.

The ignition switch is an electrical switch that has multiple poles and is operated by a key. It has four positions, which include "off", "accessory", "run" and the "lock". If the switch is locked (which is usually shown by the red light), the ignition circuit is active and it is inaccessible to start your vehicle.

To determine if the ignition switch is damaged or the ignition coil is defective, you will need to do a quick electrical test with a voltage meter. If the ignition switch is running, the voltmeter should show around 12.6, If the voltage falls below that level, it's a sign there's an open circuit in the system. This could be a solenoid, the battery or the ignition coil.

Disconnect the electrical connector from the mobile ignition lock repair services switch to ensure no other components can interfere with your test. Then, set the voltmeter to the continuity or resistance mode and put one lead on one of the terminals on the ignition switch. The other lead should be connected to the positive terminal of the battery. If the voltage gauge reads "open" or does not register any voltage, it's time to replace the switch.

Make sure you use a new ignition key ignition replacement and a high-quality ignition cylinder when replacing the switch to ensure your vehicle runs and starts properly. Also, when replacing the ignition switch, be careful not to strike the pins of the ignition cylinder with your tools or they'll get stuck and your engine will not start. You'll need to take off the steering wheel and gear selector on some vehicles to get access to the ignition cylinder. This can be a challenge and isn't recommended until you have an owner’s manual that states it's safe. Otherwise severe damage to the steering column or shifting mechanism is possible.

3. Check the Cylinder

If you've worked your way through the wiring, battery and ignition and key replacement switch and still cannot get your car to start, it may be time to examine the cylinder. It's the part that holds your key and is mechanically connected to the steering wheel lock so that a potential thief cannot control the car without a key.

You may notice that your key will not turn if the cylinder is worn out. Sometimes, the pins within the cylinder get stuck as they adapt to the shape of the key, which may cause your car to not start. The cylinder could also be sloppy. A tap with a small tackhammer will help. Just be careful not to jumble the springs inside and ensure that your key is correctly installed prior to tapping.

If you are required to move the key before it will begin, this is another indication that your cylinder has gone bad. This is a bad indication and needs to be fixed immediately, as it can only get worse over time.

To test the cylinder, you must remove the cover on the steering wheel and disconnect the battery. The old ignition switch should be easy to take off, as will the cylinder for ignition made of metal. If you don't have a spare switch, you may be able to bring your original ignition cylinder and switch to a locksmith for reuse as long as they're in good condition. After replacing the ignition switch and cylinder, make sure to reconnect the wiring and secure it before reattaching the covers and panels were removed.

4. Check the Spark Plugs

The spark plug is the final link in your ignition chain. The engine will not run if the spark plug breaks. It could be that your vehicle won't start at all, or it will run badly. In either of these scenarios, it's likely that one of several things are preventing or impeding electrical current from crossing spark plug gaps, which then ignites the fuel mixture and air in your engine.

Before you begin working on your spark plugs, be sure that you are working on a level surface and employing protective gloves and tools to prevent getting hit with. Spark plugs can get very hot and could cause serious injuries if touched by hands without gloves.

If a spark plug goes bad, you might notice that the tip of the central electrode has some light brown or gray residue on it. It may also have a black layer on the side of the electrode. These deposits, also known as fouling, can stop high-voltage electrical current from crossing the gap between the spark plug and igniting your engine.

If you suspect your spark plugs may be the culprit You could test them by remove the plugs from their tube inside the ignition coil. This can be accomplished by disconnection of the coil and the plug wire. Then, you'll be required to follow the correct procedure for your vehicle in order to remove the components that surround the plugs. Once you have removed the plugs, you can place them on a grounded metal surface and then crank the engine. If they're working you should see an intense blue spark near the point of the central electrode.

If you do not see a spark, you've identified the problem. The next step is to go backwards through the chain of ignition and check each component until the spark plugs are no longer working. All systems wear out and eventually break and this is especially applicable to ignition systems. Routine maintenance can help to reduce the time it takes to repair and avoid an issue in the worst case.
